Sheila Wee was that kid who lived in her imagination and gathered her friends around her to tell wild tales. When she grew up, she tried to satisfy her need to tell stories by teaching preschool children. But that wasn’t enough; you had to do other things in a preschool classroom apart from telling stories! And so, back in 1999 she became a professional storyteller. Because she pioneered the revival of storytelling in Singapore, she became known as Singapore’s Godmother of Storytelling. Sheila is enthusiastic about passing on her skills and her highly practical and inspirational workshops have garnered consistently high ratings from participants. As well working with educational and cultural, government and private sector organisations in Singapore, Sheila also works internationally. She has been featured storyteller and speaker at many festivals, conferences and workshops in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, UK and Vietnam. Sheila is comfortable telling stories to audiences of more than a thousand and is adept at varying her storytelling style according to her audience. Her storytelling has been described variously as warm, engaging, elegant and captivating. Whilst she feels that video can never replace the magic of face to face storytelling, she also feels that we need to get stories to our children and young people in any way we can. |
