Swee Yean taught in secondary schools and met students of diverse learning abilities. She began to use storytelling in the classroom. At first, it was to entertain and inspire the love of the English language. Her students enjoyed the daily dose of stories and told their parents about it. Gradually, she found that the oral stories stirred up empathy and in non-didactic ways created positive change in her students.
Besides telling stories to children and young people, she has performed publicly for special events and celebrations such as the Singapore Heritage Festival. She has also travelled to countries like Malaysia, India and Taiwan. Being fluent in the Mandarin, Swee Yean has taught storytelling skills to Mandarin teachers as well as senior citizens. She is still involved in programmes to derive stories from senior citizens for community building. |
